the pill is an abortifacient
In a nut shell...
* Most people think that the pill works by stopping a woman from ovulating
* High oestrogen is what stops a women from ovulating
* However, the pill used to contain high oestrogen but because of the risk with blood-clots, they started adding in more progesterone
* Progesterone works by making the lining of the womb unfavourable for implantation of an embryo.
(it also works by thickening cervical mucus so sperm cant get through)
therefore...
modern-day combined oral contraceptive pills contains less oestrogen, so they doesn't actually work by preventing ovulation every time
IF ovulation does occur, and fertilization also occurs, the progresterone in the pill will ensure the embryo (tiny human) dies because it is unable to implant into the women
ergo....the pill is an abortifacient
Some people say it doesn't matter because it is "just" an embryo....
a) an embryo is still a human being, and it is arbritray to say that an human-embryo is worth less than a human-neonate
is a toddler worth less than an adult?
b) we were all embryos too once
c) Jesus was an embryo

It's actually very easy to be pro-choice as long as you are not the one being chosen....
Well said Antonia!
Antonia,
Please check out my site and tell me what you think about the discussion over at Jen's. If you have any new information to add, please let me know.
Isn't it only some types of contraceptive pill? They're not all the same.
No paraic, this actually applies to all contraceptive pills. There is no such thing as oestrogen-only pills anymore nowadays.
the contraceptive patch and injection work in the same way, and as does the progesterone coil ('mirena')
and the copper coil actually releases copper molecules which are toxic to the embryo and directly kill it
let me know if you have any other questions!
