I love my mama!

I thought this was cute! (& also true....!)

4 Years of Age: My Mommy can do anything!
8 Years of Age: My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 Years of Age: My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 Years of Age: Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either.
16 Years of Age: Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.
18 Years of Age: That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 Years of Age: Well, she might know a little bit about it.
35 Years of Age: Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.
45 Years of Age: Wonder what Mom would think about it?
65 Years of Age: Wish I could talk it over with Mom.

The Power of One Hail Mary

The Power of One Hail Mary

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou among women,
and Blessed is the Fruit
of Thy Womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

Millions of Catholics often say the Hail Mary. Some repeat it hastily
not even thinking on the words they are saying. These following words
may help some say it more thoughtfully. They can give God's Mother great
joy and obtain for themselves graces that she wishes to give them.

One Hail Mary well said fills the heart of Our Lady with delight and
obtains for us indescribably great graces. One Hail Mary well said gives
us more graces than a thousand thoughtlessly said.

The Hail Mary is like a mine of gold that we can always take from but
never exhaust. Is it hard to say the Hail Mary well? All we have to do
is to know its value and understand its meaning.

St. Jerome tells us that "the truths contained in the Hail Mary are so
sublime, so wonderful that no man or Angel could fully understand them."

St. Thomas Aquinas, the Prince of Theologians, "the wisest of Saints and
holiest of wise men," as Leo XIII called him, preached for 40 days in
Rome on the Hail Mary, filling his hearers with rapture.

Father F. Suarez, the holy and learned Jesuit, declared when dying that
he would willingly give all the many learned books he wrote, all his
life's labors, for the merit of one Hail Mary prayerfully and devoutly
said.

St. Mechtilde, who loved our Lady very much, was one day striving to
compose a beautiful prayer in her honor. Our Lady appeared to her, with
the golden letters on her breast of: "Hail Mary full of grace." She said
to her: "Desist, dear child, from your labor for no prayer you could
possibly compose would give me the joy and delight of the Hail Mary."

A certain man found joy in saying slowly the Hail Mary. The Blessed
Virgin in return appeared to him smiling and announced to him the day
and hour that he should die, granting him a most holy and happy death.
After death a beautiful white lily grew from his mouth having written on
its petals: "Hail Mary."

Cesarius recounts a similar incident. A humble and holy monk lived in
the monastery. His poor mind and memory were so weak that he could only
repeat one prayer which was the "Hail Mary." After death a tree grew
over his grave and on all its leaves was written: "Hail Mary."

These beautiful legends show us how much devotion to Our Lady was
valued, and the power attributed to the Hail Mary devoutly prayed.

Each time that we say the Hail Mary we are repeating the very same words
with which St. Gabriel the Archangel saluted Mary on the day of the
Annunciation, when she was made Mother of the Son of God.

Many graces and joys filled the soul of Mary at that moment.

Now when we say the Hail Mary we offer anew all these graces and joys to
Our Lady and she accepts them with Immense delight.
In return she gives us a share in these joys.

Once Our Lord asked St. Francis Assisi to give Him something. The Saint
replied: "Dear Lord, I can give You nothing for I have already given you
all, all my love." Jesus smiled and said: "Francis, give Me it all again
and again, it will give Me the same pleasure."

So with our dearest Mother, she accepts from us each time we say the
Hail Mary the joys and delight she received from the words of St.
Gabriel.

Almighty God gave His Blessed Mother all the dignity, greatness and
holiness necessary to make her His own most perfect Mother. But He also
gave her all the sweetness, love, tenderness and affection necessary to
make her our most loving Mother. Mary is truly and really our Mother. As
children when in trouble run to their mothers for help, so ought we to
run at once with unbounded confidence to Mary.

St. Bernard and many Saints said that it was never, never heard at any
time or in any place that Mary refused to hear the prayers of her
children on earth.

Why do we not realize this most consoling truth? Why refuse the love and
consolation that God's Sweet Mother is offering us?

Is it our lamentable ignorance which deprives us of such help and
consolation.
To love and trust Mary is to be happy on earth now and afterwards to be
happy in Heaven.

Dr. Hugh Lammer was a staunch Protestant, with strong prejudices against
the Catholic Church. One day he found an explanation of the Hail Mary
and read it. He was so charmed with it that he began to say it daily.
Insensibly all his anti-Catholic animosity began to disappear. He became
a Catholic, a holy priest and a professor of Catholic Theology in
Breslau.

A priest was called to the bedside of a man who was dying in despair
because of his sins. Yet he refused obstinately to go to confession. As
a last recourse the priest asked him to say at least the Hail Mary after
which the poor man made a sincere confession and died a holy death.

In England, a parish priest was asked to go and see a Protestant lady
who was gravely ill, and who wished to become a Catholic. Asked if she
had ever gone to a Catholic Church, or, if she had spoken to Catholics,
or if she had read Catholic books? She replied, "No, no." All she could
remember was that------when a child------she had learned from a little
Catholic neighbor girl the Hail Mary, which she said every night. She
was Baptized and before dying had the happiness of seeing her husband
and children Baptized.

St. Gertrude tells us in her book, "Revelations" that when we thank God
for the graces He has given to any Saint, we get a great share of those
particular graces.
What graces, then, do we not receive when we say the Hail Mary while
thanking God for all the unspeakable graces He has given His Blessed
Mother?

Paris Hilton to play Mother Teresa?

An Indian film director wants to cast Paris Hilton as the star of a new film about Mother Teresa.

Award-winning director T Rajeevnath told IANS: "My agents in California have contacted Paris
Hilton."

The director said he was impressed when he heard the hotel heiress had refused to strip for Playboy magazine.

"Although there are several actresses willing to play the role of Mother Teresa, the most widely respected and loved person, the history of the actress who is finally chosen for the role would have to be analysed thoroughly before she is chosen," he added.

The English-language film will be mostly shot in West Bengal and overseas.

update on 'No contraception = ignorance".

Further to my post on the unfair treatment I recieved from the GP who marked me down because I said I would never prescribe contraception...

I wrote in my letter of complaint to the guy in charge of our GP Course, and he got in touch with the GP in question, and then made me meet up with him so we could talk about it.

Basically, the GP in question claims that he gave me a lower score because he wasn't satified with the way in which I said I would explain to 14 year old girls that I wouldn't prescribe them the pill.
On the orginal day when this all happened 2 weeks ago, and after showing me how I would be (apparently) contravening the 'Duties of a Doctor', he said "What would you say to a 14 year old girl then if she came in and asked you for the pill?".

And apparently his excuse is that it was the actual wording that caused him to mark me down.

I don't believe him one bit and I am convinced beyond any doubt that no matter WHAT wording I used, he would still have marked me down.
At the time he didn't try to correct what I said and imporve it, or say anything about being unsatisfied with it. He just listened, and then said that because of "this issue" he'd 'have' to give me a lower score

He used the wording excuse because he knows that it would actually be illegal descrimination for him to mark me down because of my beliefs in themselves, because I am fully entitled to them, and am fully entitled to act on them ( I know some Catholic GPs in England who don't prescribe contraception).

And anyway, even his 'not satisfied with the wording' excuse is rubbish, because it is unjustified to expect a 4th year medical student with no practical experience whatsoever in these situations to have a perfectly formed 'speech' and explanation about such a thing.

Explaining our position to patients is not part of our course at the moment and it is not something that we are expected to have done or to be able to do. He was just supposed to give me a 'Knowledge' score based on my knowledge of the CORE CURRICULUM that I have been taught that compare to my peers. By all means, if we were being assessed on our ability to explain our positions on sexual issues to patients then yes, of course it would be appropriate. But as it stands he was supposed to assess me on my ability to perform cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal and neurological examinations on patients and nothing else!

The guy in charge of the course agreed with me that it is unfair but apparently they 'have a policy' of not changing grades once they have been given. Not that I am particularly motivated by getting my grade changed, but still. He didn't do anything to rectify the situation, given that he admitted to me that the GP had no justification.

oh well! This is probably just a small taste of what is to come!

on being thankful

My Priest friend told me this nice quote today:

"When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs?"

-G.K. Chesterton

More try to access net child porn

This is horrific! I couldn't believe it!
~~~~~~~
Some 35,000 attempts to access child pornography websites are blocked in Britain every day, figures showed.
The figures were compiled by BT, which accounts for around a third of the internet market, and it is feared the overall number could be much higher.
They show that attempts to access the websites have tripled since the company introduced its screening technology in June 2004.
The Cleanfeed programme, which prevents users from accessing child porn sites blacklisted by the Internet Watch Foundation, initially registered 10,000 attempts to access by them BT's 3.1 million domestic users each day.
The figures showed there were four million blocked attempts to access the websites over the last four months.
Mike Galvin, director of portfolio infrastructure at BT, said: "Project Cleanfeed plays a part in protecting children worldwide and therefore reduces the viability of this activity as a business.
"However, today's figures clearly demonstrate that this type of activity continues to be an industry-wide problem, and it is therefore critical that online child protection remains high on the agenda."
John Carr, from the National Children's Home charity, told the Daily Mail: "People will be shocked by these figures - they are quite chilling. But this is the size of the issue that we are having to deal with."
The figures were released as it was claimed that internet safety and how to avoid paedophiles should be part of the National Curriculum.
The director of the Cyberspace Research Unit at the University of Central Lancashire, Dr Rachel O'Connell, said learning about the dangers posed by the internet should be compulsory in schools. "Online well-being should be a mandatory part of the school curriculum from the day a child starts at school," she said.
'No contraception = Ignorant'
A day in the life of a Catholic Medical Student
I have written a letter of complaint to my Clinical school about the GP I visit every 2 weeks (GPs are like Family Physicians).
Two weeks ago one of the doctors asked me & my student peers what we would do if a 14 yr old girl came to see us as GPs, asking to be prescribed the oral contraceptive pill. I responded that I would not prescribe her the pill because I feel genuinely and strongly that it would not be in her best interests, and that I would not do so
regardless of the age of a patient. This lead to an in-depth discussion about my beliefs on the meaning and purpose of human sexual relations and my belief that the pill violates the inherent dignity and rights of the human embryo.
Basically, it was them vs. me, but no big deal. They are entitled to believe what they want.
anyway, last Friday was our last visit to them and so we each had an individual appraisal session where they gave us feedback, and filled out the Clinical school's Feedback form about us, and how they think we've done.
One section of the form was asking about our "Knowledge" and the choices are either 'Outstanding', 'Pass' or 'Fail'.
The doctor said to me....
"We all agreed that you have 'Outstanding' knowledge in all areas but
because of this issue, [the contraception issue,] we can't give you that
grade and have to give you a 'Pass' instead."
Hmm...how very undiscriminatory of him!
I really don't care about the grade itself, but rather their unjustified reasoning for giving me a lower grade than they admit they would've given me!
So because of my religious convictions, I am deemed to deserve a lower 'Knowledge' score than someone of equal intelligence and capability, but who would instead provide artificial contraception.
It just shows their underlying attitude that if you don't agree with them then you must be mentally deficient and ignorant in some way, because 'intelligent' people just don't think like the Catholic Church.
If I was more 'intelligent' then OF COURSE I'd prescribe the pill! (*heavy sarcasm*)
It's a shame I have to complain, because I don't like complaining and the doctors were very very nice to us students, they used to take us out to lunch every time we went! But I think this events crosses the line and is entirely unjustified and discriminatory.
How ridiculous
Headteacher bans hot cross buns
A school in Suffolk has banned hot cross buns - in case they offend pupils from religious minorities.
Head teacher Tina Jackson asked for the crosses to be removed from all buns supplied by caterers in case it upset some of her pupils who are Jehovah's Witnesses.
Parents have accused her of "political correctness gone mad" reports The Sun.
But Miss Jackson, of The Oaks primary school in Ipswich, said: "For our students who are Jehovah's Witnesses, hot cross buns are not part of their beliefs.
"We decided to have the cross removed in respect of their beliefs."
The local Vicar, Father Haley Dossor, said: "I'd be amazed if anyone was offended by the cross on a bun. The school is wrong to act like this."
Thumbs DOWN
Webster's definition of marriage (see number 2)
(2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage
*pulls a disgusted face*
How distorted & false! It strips marriage of its beauty, significance and of all meaning!
This is the ACTUAL definition of marriage:
MARRIAGE., defn; As a natural institution, the lasting union of a man and a woman who agree to give and receive rights over each other for the performance of the act of generation and for the fostering of their mutual love.
The state of marriage implies four chief conditions: 1. there must be a union of opposite sexes; it is therefore opposed to all forms of unnatural, homosexual behavior; 2. it is a permanent union until the death of either spouse; 3. it is an exclusive union, so that extramarital acts are a violation of justice; and 4. its permanence and exclusiveness are guaranteed by contract; mere living together, without mutually binding themselves to do so, is concubinage and not marriage.
Christ elevated marriage to a sacrament of the New Law. Christian spouses signify and partake of the mystery of that unity and fruitful love which exists between Christ and his Church, helping each other attain to holiness in their married life and in the rearing and education of their children.
USA Abortions...
woohoo for America:
"There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades," President Bush said.
read here
I know so many people dislike Bush (well, they certainly do over here in the UK), but I think he has been very corageous and admirable in his pro-life stance and has done a great deal of good in defending the unborn in the USA.
Which is more than can be said for Mr. Blair:
For women resident in England and Wales, the total number of abortions:
2004: 185,400
2003: 181,600
2002: 175,900
Anti-cancer foods...
I got this in an email & I thought it might be interesting to post. Disclaimer: I'm not saying that I've seen the scientific proof behind each of these food suggestions, but I can see the logic. The initial advice about quitting smoking, losing weight and doing exercise are definitly scientifically supported. The rest probably are too, I've just not read the evidence myself!
The only exception is the advice given about drinking green tea; I went to a talk at my hospital a few months ago and it was all about the benefits that green tea has in reducing the risk of getting cancer in the throat (Barrett's oesophagus).
~~~

" The American Cancer Society reports that half of all these cancer deaths can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle (assuming you already lead a healthy one). Now, that's doubly heartening news! Opting for a healthier (and heartier) lifestyle means you should stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat more antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, according to a recent article published in Healthy Options lifestyle newsdigest.

For starters, let's get to know more about the top 10 anti-cancer foods. Take this list (and please take them often):

1) Tomatoes. You probably know that tomatoes are oozing with lycopene, which helps ward off the free radicals associated with lung and digestive cancers as well as prostate, ovarian and lung cancers. Lycopene is also found in watermelon and pink grapefruit.

2) Broccoli sprouts. For a veggie that's so small you can hold it with one hand, this one's got a fistful of antioxidant benefits that last for days. In the same family of cruciferous vegetables are broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage. Thei sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol protect against prostate, bladder, colon, pancreatic, gastric, breast, and other hormone-related cancers. Indeed, it's the ultimate baby vegetable, baby!

3) Berries. Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, cranberries, and grapes are all berry-rich in anthocyanins that help repair and protect DNA.

4) Soybeans. They're soy-good for your health as they've got isoflavones (like genistein) that prevent - and treat - prostate cancer. Soybeans may also reduce breast cancer risk. Soy is truly beanificial to our health!

5) Tea. Tea - make that green and black - is steeped in powerful compounds that, according to countless studies, may lower the risk of several types of cancer. Care for tea?

6) Pumpkin. This Halloween symbol - and Cinderella's chariot - has know that this superfood is a super-rich source of beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, two carotenoids that work hard to fight lung and ovarian cancers. Also rich in carotenoids are carrots, yams, squash, melons, and sweet red peppers.

7) Spinach. Aye, aye, Popeye was right - spinach's a-okay. Its active antioxidant - lutein - may even help KO cancers of the liver, ovaries, colon, and prostate. Lutein is also found in kale and other leafy greens.

8) Garlic. The allium family, to which garlic belongs, works to boost the body's antioxidant defense systems to protect against stomach, esophageal, and breast cancers. Meet the other members of the family: scallions and onions. Truly, in onion, there is strength.

9) Pineapple. This pine cone-like fruit with its coveted sweet pulp contains an anti-inflammatory enzyme - bromelain - that may inhibit the growth of malignant lung and breast cancer cells.

10) Apple. Yes, there's a mouthful of wisdom in the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Studies show that quercetin - a flavonoid abundant in apples -prevents the growth of prostate cancer cells. The phytochemicals in the skin of an apple inhibits the reproduction of colon cancer cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, eating an apple a day may reduce the risk of lung cancer by as much as 50
percent. Excuse me while I bite into my apple. "

Our Lady of Good Success

As well as being the Feast of the Purification of Our Lady & The Presentation of baby Jesus in the Temple.....today is also (previously un-beknown to me) the feast of Our Lady of Good Success. Quite an interesting story!

Hmmm....

In September a Danish newspaper publish some caricatures pictures of Mohammed (the Muslim's prophet) ....and since then the Muslim world has gone...well...semi-insane.
These pictures included drawings like Mohammed wearing a turban shaped like a bomb, and him joking about suicide bombers and stuff.
It wasn't very respectful of the newspaper to publish these pictures, but personally I think the response has been some-what over the top...

Apart from all the usual stuff, like burning Danish flags, destroying Danish produce and boy-cotting Danish goods, there have also been bomb threats made on Danish Embassies in the Middles East, Danish ambassadors have had to be recalled and a number of Danes in the Middle East have had to leave their jobs because of fear of being attacked.

Here is an article from today.

It brings me back to 2 years ago here in the England when the BBC spent several million pounds making a cartoon called Pope-Town, which was pretty insulting to our beloved Pope and mocking of the Catholic hierarchy (see here).

The response of the Catholics in England was to sign a petition which we presented to the BBC.....and then implement nation-wide prayer. I remember our parish Church held a novena to St. Joseph asking that he would help & stop the show from going on the air.

....and despite having spent A LOT of money making it, and getting ready to air it in the UK....in the end the BBC released a statement saying:

"There is a fine judgement line in comedy between the scurrilously funny and the offensive....but unfortunately, once we saw the finished series, it became clear that the programme fell on the wrong side of that line."

so it was never shown! yey!

There is an infinite amount of anti-Catholic propaganda around in the secular media, but we have to remember that only the Holy Spirit can change hearts and minds, and so prayer is the most powerful weapon we have to change the world! (in fact, there is nothing more poweful!)

~
Come Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your Divine Love. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. Oh God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit instructed the hearts of the faithful, Grant, that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
~

(although I've read that PopeTown was released on other channels round the world, like the comedy channel in Australia... Oh well. Our prayers were answered in that it wasn't shown in the UK; an already semi-pagan anti-Catholic nation!)
