In the 10 minutes till my dinner is ready (courtesy of Chef Chris), I thought I'd update on the (not-so) exciting things going on in my life.
I decided not to write about myself during Holy Week, and just focus on the importance of the week, and so I never actually posted my excitement that I WAS ON HOLIDAY!!! woohooooo! I spent all of last week visiting Chris's grandparents & staying with his family.
(All 4 of Chris's grandparents are still alive. His paternal grandparents will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this September! how cool! Chris is also the eldest of 4 siblings so what with his immediate family, random cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, random friends...there were a lot of people!)
anyway, after Holy Week & Easter we came back to our house, and I spent this last week of my holiday at home revising.
all day.
every day.
(well, minus the vast vast procrastination/time-wasting breaks).
On Monday I start back at the hospital.
I am going back to doing paediatrics at that hospital an hour from home again, so I'll only be home for the weekends.
(dinner time)
Some of you may remember how before I left for my Easter holidays I was whining on that the room the hospital gave me stunk so badly of cigarette smoke, because the people below me smoked in their room?
( I still can't believe that people are allowed to smoke in their rooms on a non-smoking hospital site!!)
Well on the last day before my vacation 2 weeks ago I went to complain to the accommodation manager because I couldn't take it any more; breathing in smoke for 12hours a day while being stranded in that room was not pleasant. All my stuff and my clothes smelt of it too!
After a fair amount of pleading on my behalf, the accommodation lady reluctantly looked in her books and said that there was another room on the ground floor of a different building that I could be moved to.
Ground floor = a bit pooey because I'm freaked out that crazy people could break into my room, but on the plus point.....no chance of cigarette stench...so I said yes!
(also, this room is in the *new* apartment block which is all shiny and has new furniture, and the walls aren't made of asbestos (which was another 'delightful' feature of my old room)).
So the conclusion of this rather long-winded story is that I am leaving again on Monday for 3 weeks, but at least I shouldn't have the cigarette issue.
On another semi-related point; I got my time-table for next year (my 6th & final year of medical school).
I have been placed away for 2/3 of the year!
waaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
That means that after the summer I won't actually be living at home with Chris till March 2008!!!!!!!
And one of the hospitals I have been put in is 2 HOURS drive from home!!
and we don't own a car!!
I considered complaining, and using the ol' "but I'm married" card, but some people in my year have been placed in hospitals away from home for the ENTIRETY of the year, so I guess it could be worse...
I am currently in the process of downloading aerobics videos off youtube.
I have seriously eaten way waaay too much this Easter (& I refuse to pay money to join a gym when I believe I can have the same effect with an (illegal?) video off youtube.
(actually, I better check whether these videos are actually legally on youtube!)
I did some pretty good starvation penance during the latter part of Holy Week, but have essentially been gorging myself ever since.
(This last week I have invented a new snack called 'apricolate'; it consists of dried apricots and chocolate...together!! Mmm.....so unhealthily healthy!)
However, as I won't be at home for the next 3 weeks, I will basically go back to my eating-basically-nothing-because-hospital-food-is-sooo-ridiculously-expensive routine, so that helps to shed the belly. Also, unlike this last week, where I have been sitting down for 95% of my days, I actually spend 95% of my days on my feet at the hospital, which will also help to shift some of those chocolate-Easter-egg pounds.
anyhoo, I think I should stop rambling now.
I actually stopped writing this post 4 hours ago to go have dinner and then go to the cinema (as a waaaaa-I'm-going-away treat).
Chris & I went to see Curse of the Golden Flower, mainly because we really like the special
effects of these Chinese films (like 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon', 'House of the flying daggers').This film had nice special effects and a pretty intricate story-line; but waaay too much of the sword-slicing and blood for me ( I did my usual of closing my eyes for most of the fighting scenes! I'm sure I've missed hours of films over the years by closing my eyes and singing "Somewhere over the rainbow" in my head so that I don't have to see the scary/violent/sexually-inappropriate bits in films!!)
anyhoo, I need to go, bed-time awaits, and I haven't prayed my rosary yet.
ciao
