abortion > birth

Radical Catholic Mom linked this article from the Los Angeles Times in one of her posts.

The fact that Russia, like Europe, is dying a slow death because of lack of births is sad, but unfortuntaly not surprising, because it is the trend of our times.

Just last night I was thinking about Italy, where the birth rate is 1.1 or something, which is hugely less than the death rate, and how perfectly this is refelcted in my own Italian family

...my mum is one of 4 siblings...they each got married...so that makes 8 people in Generation1

these 8 people had a total of 7 children between them...

So the Generation 2 has almost (but not quite) balance the Generation1.....

The 7 cousins in Generation2 range in age from 40years - 20years:

Oldest, 40years, never married, not interested in "settling down" or ever having kids
Next, 38years, just got married, had one baby, having a second in April
Next, 33 years, will probably get married in next few years and will have 1 or 2 children
Next 30 years, stated he doesn't want kids
Next 25 years, said she's not interested in children

Then you have me & my brother

So, so far ar we only have 1.5 offspring in Generation3 (one isn't born yet).....and there is NO way that my Italian cousins will have, between them, enough children to replace their generation.

So yes, Italy is dying!

Luckily though my brother & I are both major Catholics who love the idea of a big families, and we will probably have 6 kids each, so we will replace our generation!

So yeh, Europe is dying!

But for me, the most shocking part of the article was this statement about the situation in Russia:

In addition, abortions outpaced births last year by more than
100,000.

Abortions are MORE THAN births?!!!!

My word! how horrendous!!

In terms of percentage, Russia's slow population implosion is shocking because for every pregnancy, there are more abortions than births. I think the figure was something like >60% of every pregnancy ends up being aborted.

In the month of October, I try to dedicate at least one decade of the rosary each day for the conversion of Russia. And the end of abortion. And contraception. And.... the list is just too long!

I hope you and Chris may be blessed with many children one day!

How disgusting that abortions outweigh the births. :( Good on you for wanting to have a big family :D
