woohoo for America:
"There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades," President Bush said.

I know so many people dislike Bush (well, they certainly do over here in the UK), but I think he has been very corageous and admirable in his pro-life stance and has done a great deal of good in defending the unborn in the USA.
Which is more than can be said for Mr. Blair:
For women resident in England and Wales, the total number of abortions:
2004: 185,400
2003: 181,600
2002: 175,900

As a person who voted for bush twice I don't think he's any better or worse than the presidents we've had in the recent past. He isn't as great as some would make him out to be, but he's also not the monsters others would.
hey there! I cant really comment on what he's been like in terms of general national policies, but surely he's been better than past Presidents in terms of his pro-life stance and what he's done for pro-life issues (such as the ban of partial birth abortion, and not spending federal money on embryonic stem cell research, and the protection of the unborn act (or whatever it was called!))...?
(I have no clue what the pro-life stance of past presidents has been like, I'm just going on what I've heard!)
Erm, shouldn't you be doing some work at this point in the day? ;o)(I suppose I should be doing some too)
Past Presidents-
Believe it or not since abortion was legalized the US has had only one President who went on the record as Pro-choice.
Richard Nixon-Abortion was legalized on his watch but he resigned office shortly after for other reasons.
G. Ford-Wanted a Constitutional ammendment to let each state decide on abortion, thus restoring the Pre-Roe system, this never got off the ground.
Jimmy Carter-A liberal Democrat, but also a devout Protestant (go figure) he recently has spoken out saying he is Pro-life and that abortion should only be legal to save the life of the mother. Thanks Jimmy, but a little late!
Ronald Reegan-Very much pro-life, he sewed the seeds of a generation of young Conservative intellectials like John Roberts and Sam Alito. The Reegan presidency sought to eliminate abortion by chipping away at it slowly.
George Bush Sr.-Basicaly continued the Reegan program though not with much zeal.
Bill Clinton-Famous for his "abortion should be safe, legal, and rare" quote that seemed to express what the slim majority of Americans believe. Despite saying they should be rare though, Clinton clearly advocated abortion on demand. His Justice Department headed by Janet Reno created a whole sub-division desgined to protect abortion clinics from Protestors, bullying peacful Christians for praying in front of them and such. Clinton vetoed a major piece of Pro-life legeslation that the congress passed.
George W. Bush-History has yet to reach a verdict but putting Roberts and Alito on the court may be the greatest victory of the Pro-life movement in the US to date!
Typically Republicans=Pro-life, Democrats=Pro-choice but there are exceptions on both sides. Sadly the Republican party is drifting pro-choice even as this position becomes more unpopular in the US! Some people say the Republicans don't care about the pro-life movement at all, they just want our money and our votes. While I can understand why some would take that cynical view, the best chance the Pro-life movement has is Republican electoral victories in 2006 and 2008. This should give us that 5th Judge on the court so that we can overturn Roe!
Well that's good to hear, fewer abortions..it has to start somewhere right? To think of America being so big, that is a huge acchievement.
Goodness those stats are high, I should look up Australian stats.
I'm having a great read of these new posts!! whoo hooo ;)
maybe fewer abortions, but what about teen-pregnancies? In my eyes your taking the life of a child away too. When a person can't be a child because it has to be a parent so soon it's not healthy for the teen-parent.
Yara,
I think you are wrong, abortion is a million times worse than a teen pregnancy being carried to term!
Not healthy for the parent? You seem to be forgeting that the Virgin Mary's pregnancy was a Teen Pregnancy. Once upon a time in the western world people had kids at a younger age (women are much more fertille at 19 than 35.) None of us would be here to day if there wasn't a teen pregnancy in the family tree.
That said, obviously things have changed, the lifespan isn't 35 anymore and 19 is young not middle age. Maybe teenagers simply shouldn't be having sex?
Letting a woman get an abortion because she is young is setting her up for depression, if raising a child is to hard there is always adoption.
I'm a support of President Bush. I don't think he's perfect, no one is, but he's family/pro-life values couldn't be closer to perfect for a President. I was grateful for his words in his speech for the Sanctity of Life.
I hate Bush and the Republican party plain and simple!
You want a real American conserative force, vote for Constitution Part
Sorry, The U.S. is a two party system now. If that changes, it's not going to be a three party system, it's going to be a one party system. It just costs too much money to run a successful campaign for a third party to run at this time.
Yours in Christ,
Thursday
Hey guys, thanks so much for your comments! That was very interesting!
I must confess to being woefully ignorant on American politics!
Fewer abortions however must be a good thing, and, while I don't agree with Bush on a number of issues (e.g. the environment & Iraq (not because I know anything about the politics of the war in Iraq, but because JP2 said it was an unjust war)), but I do think he has done a lot of good for the unborn!
Yara,
The problem is when you say :
"but what about teen-pregnancies? In my eyes your taking the life of a child away too. When a person can't be a child because it has to be a parent so soon it's not healthy for the teen-parent. "
Teens (and as you say are needing to ba a child) are having sex, that is the number 1 factor that takes the childhood out of this teen child.
The pregnancy is the result of that, the after effect, all things have consequences.
The issue then becomes, that another life has been created in this process.
So if this teen simply cannot be a parent then she has the option to adopt the child, no questions asked, there are places where you can do that and they dont ask anything of you.
And if that teen still wants and needs to be a child, then she should consider waiting until she is an adult to have sexual relations.
I hope I didnt' confuse anyone
