anti-life and anti-love

I was in the Early Pregnancy Scanning centre the other day; it's where ultrasound scans done during early pregnancy (8-10weeks). It's not done as a routine, only if doctors have any reason to be worried about the pregnancy; for example, if the woman has a history of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or if she has been having any unusual bleeding or if she is just particularly anxious.

anyway!

So I have spent quite a few morning in the Early Pregnancy Scanning centre and seen lots of women being scanned. Some of them ask for a picture of the baby and so the Doctor usually prints them off another copy. Sometimes ladies forget to ask for a copy at the beginning and so the doctor usually then just gives them one of her copies (she usually take about 2 or 3 of pretty much the same thing).

I was in the other day and a teenage girl came in with her boyfriend. She had been sent up from the Emergency room because she had come in with some unusual bleeding and they just found out she was pregnant, and she didn't know (even though she was some 2 months pregnant already!)

As is usual with these cases the doctor asked the girl if she wanted to keep "it". and the girl said no.

So the doctor explained that even though she wants to have an abortion, a scan will have to be done anyway just to make sure that she is actually pregnant and then they can decide what to do with "it".

Before the scanning took place the doctor asked the girl if she wanted to see the screen and or if she'd prefer not to.
They ask this because they don't want a picture of their tiny baby to disuade women from having an abortion. how horrendous.

But the girl wanted to see the scan and so the doctor showed her. A perfect healthy & normal pregnancy in every way.

Afterwards the doctor explained to the girl how to go out getting an abortion, who she should contact etc etc etc. it was so sad.

The doctor then began sticking the ultrasound photos she'd just taken into the girl's hospital notes. The girl noticed and asked if she could have a copy of one of the pictures (there were 3 pictures of almost the same thing).

The doctor stopped for a second and I could tell she wasn't sure what to say and then she LIED and told the girl that she isn't allowed to give out pictures because they are needed for the hospital notes!

It was a complete and total lie because she doesn't need 3 pictures of the same thing AND I have seen her give out pictures before to other women when they've asked.

In my humble opinion, I believe that she didn't give her a picture because she didn't want to disuade her from having an abortion, and she was worried that the picture may tug on the girl's heart-strings and stop her from going through with it.

It is honestly depressing how anti-life and anti-love the gynaecology and obstetric department is.

Thats absolutely and utterly disgusting! If anything will disuade someone from having an abortion or will perhaps not make them regret a rash decision in 30 yrs down the track then I whole heartedly support everything that they do in their power to make that brief flicker of doubt consume that young mothers mind.

Gosh, thats such a freakin outrage.

But Anto, I have to ask you, have you done or said anything about this to anybody? Even just the doc herself?? I know you're in a rather delicate position yourself as a student, but maybe just when you get the chance, talk to the doc and ask her why the different approach with the different patients. Sorry but I can't help asking! This is a rhetorical question, and I think it's not necessary for you to publicly post an answer; it's between you and the doctor. Ciao.

I still can't understand how it happens that the practice of caring for and delivering babies and the practice of killing them are considered parts of the same specialty. I've been fortunate in being able to have only doctors who do not perform abortions, but I know that many are not fortunate enough to have that option.

Have you considered what field of medicine do you want to practice in when you graduate?

In Singapore, the ob/gyn department is somewhat 'shunned' by most Catholic med students/doctors I know, because it requires them to know how to, and to perform things like abortion. As a result, those who do end up in this field are pro-choicers who have no qualms supporting abortion. Those who are 'conscientious objectors' aren't allowed to enter ob/gyn training.

This kind of scenario makes it important to fight for our rights to object to an injustice according to our conscience, and yet at the same time, avail ourselves to serve in the field.

So sad.

I wish there was something you could have done to help her like direct her to a pregnancy help center.

This is horrible - people are murdering children and our society is accepting it. O, how horrible it will be on the day of Judgment. How horrible...

As Our Lord taught, near the end, good will be called evil and evil will be called good.

hi guys,
Thanks a lot for your comments.

I didn't mention possibly the worst part of that story....

The doctor is Catholic and wears a medal of Mary.
Although when I was speaking to her about her Mary medal she said; "I'm a very very lapsed Catholic. I keep meaning to make it to Church but never do."

She has the seed of faith within her, but it's just never been nurtured and so is being starved and suffocated by the lies of Satan.

But yes, it is very very sad. I didn't say a word for the rest of the morning as I felt so upset and distressed.

Brendan - no, I didn't say anything to her at the time. Apart from their not being much of an opportunity because the next patient was rapidly ushered in, I was also in a bit of shock and wasn't quite sure what to say/think. Now I have left that hospital so I dont see the doctor anymore. But I am going to write to her.

Antonia - no I really dont know what type of medicine I would like to go into myself. Obs & Gynae is basically a no-no for Catholics in England because noone would hire you if you weren't willing not only to perform abortions, but not to give out the pill/coil etc. They just wouldn't take you anywhere because you'd be unable to fill out the job description.

I might go into NaPro technology or something...but I'll have to wait & see

Moneybags- apart from my prayers there was nothing I could do for her. As a student I just basically sit in the corner and listen to the doctor talking to tha patient. and then the patient leaves. I prayed to Mary that she would soften the girl's heart...but I don't know whatelse I could've done.

I really hope you work in a gynaecology department one day because I know you would do everything you can to save lives. You could be the one to help nurture seeds of faith. You could be a beacon for the Light of the World, a tabernacle for Our Most High God.

I know that you will do great things. I too have been very upset after reading your post late last night. I can only hope they don't murder their child. I can only pray...

My priest talked about abortion today in the homily. And, he said that mystics have already revealed that the chalice of God's wrath is overflowing. He said that if we continue to murder the unborn, the punishment will be unimaginable. I fear that all who do nothing to stop this genocide will suffer in the Judgment to come.

And I have a question: Do aborted babies go to Heaven? I can only pray that they do.

We can only pray for God's mercy and for all pregnant mothers.
